In February of 2013 Shell Canada undertook a delineation coring program to understand the shallow but complex geology beneath the Ft. McMurray oil sands. The program was unique in that the bore holes were drilled from an angle 26 degrees off horizontal using a core rig mounted on a custom sub base to achieve the steep angle. It was critical to the technical team to have 100% of the bore hole cored hence the need for continuous coring while directionally drilling. The Tech Directional DeviDrill system performed perfectly and their team was professional and experienced. The Tech crews embraced the Shell Safety Management System and helped make the project a Goal Zero success. It was completed in 127 days without a single HSSE incident.
